The nights are drawing in but the stars are shining brightly this Autumn
What a time to be working in the UK commercial and hospitality interior design sector! After one of the UK’s most politically and economically turbulent summers, how encouraging to be part of a collaborative industry bursting with creative innovations and rising stars. There were so many industry events this Autumn that we don’t know where to start.
Here are a few of the highlights for us – but this is by no means an exhaustive list…
The much-anticipated London Design Festival took place from 17th – 25th September and showcased such an over-whelming amount of design that the website had a handy ‘my festival’ tool allowing you to create your own schedule. Highlights for us included KI’s fascinating exhibition about their ‘personal sun’ design, continuing a growing trend for research into light designed to be in tune with individuals and wellbeing rather than simply aesthetic.Decorex International this year boasted a luxury street food market, champagne bar, exclusive seminars and workshops by BIID mentors. We were very pleased to see a seminar on Bespoke Spaces and Cross Collecting scheduled.
The big news for many in our industry was the Restaurant Design Show (27th and 28th September) which was launched this year. With free attendance, 50 educational seminars and 120 international suppliers it certainly looked set to be a successful event.
Hot on the heels of the Restaurant Design Show was the annual Restaurant and Bar Design Awards (29th September). This year the theme was ‘Street’ with four bars by different designers inspired by street art, dance and music from four different eras (1970s, 80s, 90s and 00s).October (3rd – 5th) saw Olympia transformed for The Restaurant Show which is now in its 28th year. However, this year a new Bar and Pub Show ran alongside it, as well as The Conscious Hospitality Show. The exhibitor list was formidable with household names and independents side-by-side.
The much anticipated Sleep Event (22nd – 23rd November), which focuses on hotel design, saw record numbers last year. Its pop-up bar, last year designed by Conran and Partners, has been shortlisted for The Restaurant and Bar awards several years running.
Last but not least, LuxLive, (23rd and 24th November) is Europe’s biggest annual lighting event, attracting a staggering 8000+ visitors each year. Highlights for us include talks on the next big lighting trends in hospitality, and a lecture on light and perception by the ever-fascinating Dr Ian Jordan. In addition, we’ll be looking forward to seeing some fantastic presentations by contenders for the SLL Young Lighter of the Year.As per our previous blog, although this year has been a little hectic for the Optime team, we continue to try to get along to as many events as we possibly can. To network, to learn and to show our support for the rising stars of our industry. We hope to meet you at one of them soon. In the meantime, if there’s anything lighting-related that we can advise you on, call our friendly team of experts on 01462 441920.
